Obama calls for end to the ‘cruelty’ of family separations

"Under this bill, when people are being prosecuted for illegally crossing the border, families will remain together under DHS custody through the length of their proceedings", Ryan said, noting the bill includes funding that the Homeland Security Department can use to provide housing for these families.

The government is facing growing criticism for having no system in place to reunite thousands of children with their parents after being separated at the border.

Trump seemed loath even to talk about immigration, but when he finally did, he stuck to the line that Congress needs to pass comprehensive immigration legislation - like one of the two bills the House will vote on later this week.

The week is ending the way it started - with lots of confusion about the policy that resulted in separating immigrant children from their parents.

The Democratic mayor said he didn't know until that morning that such large numbers of children taken from their parents were being brought to NY. If children are to be sent here he should demand paperwork connecting those children to a parent somewhere. If a family is caught, the parents are arrested and the children are taken away - to be "put into foster care or whatever", as White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has said.

Previous administrations have responded to similar situations at the U.S. -Mexico border, but none have resorted to the separation of families as a device to deter migration from Central America.

The comments come amid news that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has been working on executive action that would end the separation process. And members on the fence over pending immigration legislation were also heading to the White House to meet with Trump. They want open borders, which breeds frightful crime.

"Along with millions of Americans across the country, we refuse to be silent until every single infant, toddler, and child that Donald Trump's administration has ripped from their parents' arms is returned to them; all immigrants and families who are being needlessly and possibly illegally detained are freed; and the people who organized, perpetrated, and cheered on this immoral assault on human decency are brought to justice in the courts and at the ballot box".

Following the meeting he tweeted: "Republicans want security". And officials said the cases of the children already separated and turned over to their custody would proceed as usual.

First lady Melania Trump made a surprise trip to Texas to get a firsthand look at the crisis affecting children.

Criticism of the president's family-separation policy has mounted at home and overseas.

More than 2,000 minors have been separated from their families since early May.

Nielsen's action wouldn't end the zero tolerance policy, but would aim to keep families together and ask the Department of Defense to help house the detained families. Bob Carey said, "This is child abuse being perpetrated by a government".

Meantime, the Justice Department sought to modify a federal court order that limits USA officials' ability to detain immigrant children longer than 20 days.

After children are released to a parent or relative, guardians must make sure the kids attend immigration court hearings and check in regularly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
