Mbappe's record goal sends France into last-16

Pogba beat his defender and found Giroud with a ideal pass. Giroud then chipped it for Mbappe to easily tap it past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

The teenage forward tapped in a ball headed toward goal in the 34th minute to give France a 1-0 victory over Peru on Thursday.

Peru need to beat the strongly fancied French in Yekaterinburg in their Group C encounter or face an early exit from Russian Federation.

It was the right call, not only because Mbappe surpassed David Trezeguet as France's youngest World Cup goalscorer at 19 years and 183 days, but because the Paris Saint-Germain youngster tormented Peru down the right flank and worked well with Giroud.

Lloris was making his 100th France appearance and the goalkeeper was nearly tested by an ambitious strike from Yoshimar Yotun, but the shot from the halfway line drifted wide.

Peru coach Gareca sent on Anderson Santamaria and Jefferson Farfan at the break, while Samuel Umtiti shook off a dead leg, before Aquino clipped the outside of the post with a swerving drive from 25 yards.

Once again, France struggled to find their rhythm, with the trio of Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe playing brilliantly together but too often in isolation of the rest of the side.

Talking Point - Do France have the momentum to go the distance?

Kylian Mbappe's first World Cup goal put France into the round of 16.

The first clear chance of the match was in the 31st minute with Paolo Guerrero's shot blocked by Hugo Lloris on his 100th appearance for France.

87' Guerrero takes the free kick from outside the 18 yard box, but it's nowhere near high enough - over the wall and straight into the arms of Lloris.

But it was midfielder Paul Pogba who opened things up for Mbappe's goal.

Pogba slid Giroud into the area and when the striker's shot looped over Gallese via a deflection off Christian Ramos, Mbappe could not miss from inside the six-yard box.
