The two clubs had been discussing a deal for the playmaker worth 60m euros (£52.75m) - 55m (£48.35m) plus a maximum of 5m (£4.4m) add-ons.

Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by many media about the transfer of Nabil Faulkner to the Liverpool club.

In a statement released on the French club's official website, Lyon claimed that a breakdown in negotiations have resulted in French worldwide remaining where he is for the time being.

Highly regarded as one of the best attackers in French top flight, Nabil Fekir has been the rising star of European football this season.

The club's statement continued: "Although Liverpool have been the priority of a possible transfer for Nabil.Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of our captain, who is a leading player for the 2018/19 season when the club will play in the Champions League".

The uncertainty carried into Saturday - much to the annoyance of France boss Didier Deschamps, who wants all of his players to have solved their futures before travelling to Russian Federation for the World Cup. He came on in the second half of that game, which was at Lyon's home ground, to a great reception from the home fans.

Liverpool was hoping to add Fekir to their off-season signings of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and RB Leipzig's Naby Keita.

Liverpool had been confident on Thursday of completing a deal for Fekir before the weekend after agreeing a £53m fee with Lyon.

It had looked as though Jurgen Klopp's Reds had wrapped up the deal to sign the Frenchman prior to the World Cup following weeks of negotiations with the Ligue 1 club's president Jean-Michel Aulas, but complications emerging during the player's medical examination prior to the transfer had first raised alarms in the Liverpool camp.

Known for his outstanding technical abilities, the 24-year-old will prove to be a fantastic addition to this Liverpool team, who have shown tremendous potential over the past few months.

Liverpool did not attempt, suggest or offer to renegotiate any terms for Fekir.
