In recent days, Trump and his allies have stepped up their attacks on the probe, seizing on a report by the Justice Department's inspector general that castigated FBI officials for their conduct during the 2016 Hillary Clinton email investigation.

The FBI seal is attached to a podium prior to Director is Christopher A. Wray speaking at a news conference at FBI Headquarters, on June 14, 2018 in Washington, D.C. after the release of an inspector general's report.

At a House hearing Tuesday, Republicans angrily asked Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz how anti-Trump texts found between some employees who worked on the Clinton probe didn't influence the outcome.

"As I said the other night, the investigators now need to be investigated if we're going to see justice here", Giuliani told Hannity. "These children are not animals, they're not bargaining chips, they're not leverage to help President Trump build his wall". "There is growing evidence that 302s were edited and changed", he said. We are better than that. The information was marked confidential, the lowest category of classified information, another person said. "They are not. They are talking about kids separated from their mom and their dad sitting in cages on our southern border".

At that point, both Rep.

Trump himself had eagerly awaited the inspector general's report in hopes that criticism of Comey and the FBI could discredit Mueller's investigation.

Trump and his supporters have sought to highlight text messages documented in the report between two senior Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, agent Peter Strzok and lawyer Lisa Page, that reflected strong animus toward Trump, then the Republican presidential candidate.

"Bias and fairness can not coexist", said Gowdy, in his opening remarks. In his emails, Strzok describes himself as a conservative Democrat.

"I never saw any indication of bias, and Peter Strzok did the first draft of my letter to Congress on October 28 that Hillary Clinton blames for her losing the election", Comey said.

Mr. Strzok also had a key role in investigating Hilary Clinton's use of a private email server to transmit confidential documents while secretary of state. "It was baseless. It was unsubstantiated".

Critics on the right have also drawn attention to Strzok's work at the beginning of special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

But while the report criticized the FBI's handling of the investigation it noted the actions were not politically motivated.

"There were other team members involved".

The IG said with regard to Strzok's text messages, he couldn't think of anything more concerning than a law enforcement officer suggesting they may use their power to affect an election. "In many of those instances actually, it was the prosecutors who were making the decisions, not the agents".
