Stephan Lichtsteiner has signed for Arsenal from Juventus.

Last season, Lichtsteiner made 32 appearances in all competitions for Juventus as the Turin-based club clinched a seventh consecutive Serie A title and fourth consecutive Coppa Italia.

"(Emery) is a coach who knows what he wants and who also progresses the players, also the old players like me", Lichtsteiner said. "Stephan will improve us on and off the pitch", Emery told Arsenal's official website.

Lichtsteiner will captain Switzerland at the World Cup (he's now on 99 caps) and despite his advancing years, he will still bring a winning mentality to the Gunners, as well as a bucket-load of experience. The deal is subject to completion of the regulatory process, according to the club.

It is not perhaps the most exciting of signings, a 34-year-old who cost nothing and was allowed to leave by his former club.

Speaking on his first signing after taking over from Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery said he is proud to get the experienced defender on board.

Furthermore, he will don the number 12 shirt previously worn by Olivier Giroud before his move to Chelsea in January.

Lichtsteiner is a serial victor having won eight League Championships during his career in his native Switzerland and Italy. "The big objective is to come back on the highest level".

"A big goal is to return to the Champions League, a club like Arsenal simply belongs to the elite group".

The Gunners will play in the Europa League this season having missed out on a place in the Champions League as a result of their sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
