A readout from the French presidency of Mr Macron's call last week said the French leader had told Mr Trump that his decision to slap tariffs on the exports of USA allies were both "illegal" and a "mistake".

Trudeau and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland later tweeted photos of the women's empowerment meeting, showing Trump's empty chair.

The US president, who arrived at the summit in Canada late and left early to fly to Singapore to prepare for his summit with Kim Jong-un, shocked fellow leaders with a bellicose press conference on Saturday in which he attacked the trade policies of other countries.

Trump also threatened: "I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!"

"Very dishonest & weak", Trump continued. "The U.S. pays tremendous tariffs on dairy, as an example, 270 per cent. we don't want to pay anything, why should we pay anything?"

"These are jointly shared principles, although the pitfalls lie in the details", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press conference before the release of the communique.

Tweeting en route to his next summit in Singapore, Mr Trump said he had instructed United States officials "not to endorse the communique as we look at tariffs on automobiles".

Trump's latest verbal counter-punch came in response to comments made by Trudeau at the press conference, in which he threatened to torpedo negotiations on a new NAFTA deal if the USA did not remove the steel and aluminum tariffs. "As Canadians we are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

"We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit", a spokesman for Trudeau tweeted.

And he says his steel and aluminum tariffs are based on legitimate national security concerns, rebuffing the concerns of allies.

Trudeau said he had reiterated to Trump that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S. "We make commitments and keep them", the presidency said, adding that "France and Europe maintain their support for this statement".

Trump will now begin his almost 20-hour journey to Singapore where he is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12, a tête-à-tête created to encourage the rogue state to end its nuclear program. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't", he tweeted.

Trudeau's view of how the summit went was a marked contrast to Trump's take.

European officials said Trump had tried to water down the language in the draft communique on the WTO and rules-based trade.
