Shanmugam is Singapore's Minister for Law and Home Affairs and he has the responsibility to make sure that the summit, the first between a sitting United States president and a North Korean top leader, goes without a hitch from the security point of view.

Officials from the two sides held last-minute talks aimed at laying the groundwork for a meeting that was nearly unthinkable just months ago when the two leaders were exchanging insults and threats + that raised fears of war.

Get that nailed down and he said the summit provides "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity".

On May 30, Pompeo met with North Korean spy chief Kim Yong-chol in NY; their discussion concluded two hours earlier than expected, as Kim refused to make any commitment whatsoever on denuclearization, according to the Washington Post.

Who are the key players in the North Korea regime and how are they related to the Supreme Leader?

The United States is willing to offer North Korea "unique" security guarantees if it embarks on "complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday.

"If diplomacy does not move in the right direction ... those measures will increase".

Earlier in May, North Korea, too, had threatened to cancel the meeting in protest against the joint military exercise the USA had conducted with South Korea.

In a statement, the White House said Mr Trump would speak to the media before departing for the U.S. at 8:00pm. He had earlier been scheduled to leave on Wednesday.

An aviation source in China said that "It probably cost a lot of money as well as representing a huge political burden to loan Kim the aircraft", the publication Chosun Ilbo reported.

The sense of anticipation was palpable as Mr Trump headed to meet Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, with people lining the streets waving cell phones.

"South Korean national news agency Yonhap warned of the consequences there would be if Trump walked out of "the historic summit without a written agreement" ahead of the mid-term elections".

The despot took a break from official government business on Monday to take a mini tour with Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, his sister and other top deputies.

The sudden change in schedule added to a dizzying few days for foreign policy for Trump, who shocked USA allies over the weekend when he used a meeting of the Group of 7 industrialized economies in Canada to alienate America's closest friends in the West. Lashing out over trade practices, he lobbed insults at the G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Lee Do-kyu, also 27 and unemployed, said the recent inter-Korean summits had raised his interest in politics, but it had waned rapidly.

Trump will also speak with reporters in Singapore before departing for home.

KCNA noted that the summit meeting is the first in history between the two countries and will be held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world". It has been speaking of a "changed era", where old certainties are being rethought to achieve denuclearisation and peace.

The world will be watching to see if US President Donald Trump can broker a deal to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula.

Trump landed in Singapore a little after 8:30 p.m. local time for the highly-anticipated meeting with the North Korean leader, which is set to take place on Tuesday.

White House officials have said Rodman will play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations. After greeting each other - an image sure to be devoured around the world - the two leaders planned to sit for a one-on-one meeting that a US official said could last up to two hours, with only translators joining them. That means giving up its nuclear arsenal - and its ability to produce or procure more nuclear weapons - permanently.
