AMC comes for MoviePass with $20/month Stubs membership - and it sounds awesome

The theater chain on Wednesday announced a new service to its loyalty program, AMC Stubs, allowing subscribers to see up to three movies a week for a monthly fee of $19.95. Unlike MoviePass, subscribers will be allowed to see all three movies on the same day, and can watch the same movie repeatedly. The program kicks off next Tuesday, when members can enroll online and start using the service immediately.

A-List, launching June 26, is sufficiently different from MoviePass and may prove to be steep competition.

MoviePass and AMC have feuded in the past over specifics regarding MoviePass access to AMC theaters and even went so far as to take some AMC theaters out of the MoviePass cache. A-List also allows moviegoers to book tickets in advance, a feature that is not available with MoviePass.

AMC operates approximately 1,000 theaters and 11,000 screens worldwide, including 18 locations in Alabama.

Helios and Matheson Analytics issued a warning about the company's ability to stay in business in a regulatory filing in April.

Theatres chief executive Adam Aron pointedly said in a statement that AMC's program is at a "sustainable price".

In response, a representative for AMC notes how they "understand the comparison, but we're focused on our own program and on delivering the very best, most reliable movie-going value option in the entertainment industry, which is what we believe AMC Stubs A-List provides to our guests".

"Thanks for making us look good AMC!", the MoviePass tweet read. "Different versions of this type of program have worked well in Europe for more than a decade to drive incremental attendance and we feel strongly that given the choice, audiences will want to see their favorite films in Imax". It was a smashing success when it came out a few years ago; so much so that the company had some difficulty keeping up with the number of subscribers it acquired in a short period.
