Two Security Personnel Injured in Ongoing Encounter in Pulwama

The troops associated with 55 Rashtriya Rifles of Indian army and Central Reserve Police Force killed the youth during a cordon and search operation and firing on protesters in Drabgam area of the district.

No casualty has been reported yet and the situation is presently under control. Tiger had been involved in the stone pelting incident on March 24, 2016, and was arrested for his crime, although he was released 5 days later. Police officials said two army soldiers, including a Major were also wounded in the initial exchange of fire with militants.

Around two to three terrorists are expected to be trapped in the area including. top Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Sameer Tiger.

Bhat met his end around 2.15 pm after security forces, acting on a tip-off that terrorists were holed up inside a house, cordoning the area in the morning on Monday. Not only this, a dozen protestors also got injured due to their clashes with the security forces.

He has been identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar, the official said adding the circumstances in which the 25-year-old youth was killed are being ascertained. Ahmad was rushed to district hospital where he succumbed. Latest reports suggest that five civilians have sustained grievous wounds and a total of 15 are injured.

Witnesses said the police fired teargas and pellets to push back the protesting crowds but without success, "The Army men first fired aerial shots to disperse the protesters and when they didn't relent, they fired directly at the protesters", sources said.

Notably, Sameer Tiger is blamed for many political and civilian killings in Pulwama.

The authorities have also suspended train services through Pulwama.
