Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who now is running for the Senate in Utah, said in a tweet Sunday evening that "Robert Jeffress says 'you can't be saved by being a Jew, ' and 'Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell.' He's said the same about Islam".

His comments refer to U.S. President Donald Trump inviting Jeffress to deliver a prayer at the opening of U.S. embassy in Jerusalem on Monday.

Jeffress, a Christian fundamentalist and one of Trump's first and most loyal religious supporters, has previously been denounced by the ADL and civil rights groups for making inflammatory statements such as, "You can't be saved by being a Jew" and "Islam is a false religious system" led by "Satan himself".

Three months before the start of the 2008 Republican presidential primaries in 2008, Jeffress said in a sermon that the candidate Mitt Romney, a Mormon, was part of a cult.

"Historic Christianity has taught for 2,000 years that salvation is through faith in Christ alone".

"Those comments Mitt used were out of context, they were twisted, some were not accurate at all", Jeffress said, insisting that the fact that he and millions of other evangelicals believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven is "really not newsworthy and it certainly doesn't qualify me as a bigot".

Pastor Hagee is the founder of Christians United for Israel and of the Cornerstone Church here in San Antonio. It's located in part of the city that Palestinians believe should be the site of their own capital and that many worldwide observers consider occupied territory seized by the Israeli government in 1967.

He stressed that Japan's position is that the disputes and Jerusalem's status should be resolved via negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Big-name pastors also came to Jeffress' defense, including Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in California. "No one comes to the Father but through me'".

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith said on Monday that the controversial views of Pastor Robert Jeffress about Judaism and gays is "well-documented". The Anti-Defamation League also expressed their dissent of Jeffress and his involvement in the ceremony. Hagee had endorsed McCain, but McCain disavowed him after the preacher was quoted as saying that Hitler was doing God's work.

Saeb Erekat told the Voice of Palestine radio Monday that Trump violated a promise to hold off on moving the embassy to give peace talks a chance.
