McIlroy is a combined 29-under in the past five years at the PLAYERS, tops in the field, with a best finish of sixth in 2014.

Day led going into the ultimate spherical at Quail Hole and obtained a textual content from shut good friend Woods Saturday night time urging him to seal the victory.

Spieth and Thomas could both take the world No. 1 ranking from Dustin Johnson (+1800) depending on how they finish; Johnson must finish at least T11 to keep it. Spieth was fourth in his first PLAYERS Championship four years ago but has missed the cut the past three.

"I was a little stubborn the first few years I came here and was trying to break away from that, but you just have to play this golf course a certain way and be a little bit better than everyone else with your irons and your wedges, and that's usually a good combination around here".

My schedule gets pretty insane now so it was important to give myself a bit of a break before this week.

"I think the week after the U.S. Open this year, maybe for the 2018 Travelers", Spieth responded with a smile. "I think this is a year we have some great chances".

That's what I've been trying to work on in the break, but off the course I've just bought a new games console so I've been playing a lot of Federation Internationale de Football Association on that. I'm only renting so things might change next year.

"There is no added thing that any other tournament brings that this tournament doesn't have", Spieth said.

Thomas has participated three times; Spieth has done so four times.

"Therefore, guys like Rickie, who kind of catches some slack for having not won a major yet, essentially he's won what's harder to win than a major: the Players". It's also good I've already played here a few times. This is only the second time they have played with each other on the Stadium Course.

"I've got so many opportunities".

"Ever since I was a kid, even more so than like Major championships, I always held number one, as many of you know, above those for some reason". I mean, I played well, I thought well, I putted well. "But we'll see if I can go ahead and get some mentions in there and maybe make myself talked about by week's end". The champion will pick up nearly $2m, 600 fedEx Cup points, a five-year PGA Tour exemption, and a three-year entry to all four majors - it really can be a life-changing experience.

With 11 PGA Tour victories in his career, Spieth has been one of the world's best players since he turned professional in 2012. You have to be good around the greens and around the par-5s in two. It'll be fun. I'm looking forward to playing with the two of them. He followed up his Masters win with a T-7 finish as Patrick Cantlay's partner at the Zurich and then went -6 on the weekend to finish solo 8th last week in Charlotte.
