In a significant reshuffle late Monday (14 May) evening, Irani was shifted out of the I&B Ministry, and her deputy, Minister of State Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, was handed over the portfolio. It won't be a bad option to keep Piyush Goyal as the finance minister even if Arun Jaitley gets fit within a few months.

Union Minister Smriti Irani has lost her Information and Broadcasting portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle on Monday.

Days after she drew the ire of the Rashtrapati Bhawan over the controversy that broke out at the National Film Awards, Union minister Smriti Irani was divested of the charge of the crucial information and broadcasting ministry.

Irani was given additional charge of the I&B ministry in July past year when M Venkaiah Naidu resigned from the post after being made vice-president. Piyush Goyal is now the Railway Minister.

Jaitley underwent a successful kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) today.

He was appointed finance minister in Modi's first government and has remained at the helm since as India rose to become one of the world's fastest growing economies.

This is the second time that Irani has been moved from a key ministry.

These developments are said to have occurred following several recent controversies that rocked the I&B ministry after Smriti Irani took over. There had been speculation about her departure since the PMO, in an unusual public rebuke, ordered the reversal of the ministry's controversial guidelines purportedly meant to tackle "fake news".

She now has the sole charge of the Textile Ministry.

Even Lok Sabha elections are held in stipulated time next year, Piyush Goyal is a flawless person to come up with a populist sensible budget which can woo voters towards BJP before the elections.

The pros and cons of stopping Free Dish will be sent to the ministry for it to take a call on it, PTI reported. Alphons Kannanthanam has been relieved of the post of MoS of MeitY to allow him to fully focus on the tourism ministry ahead of Kumbh-2019.
