According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline is $2.81, an increase of 45 cents from a year ago. That represents a 4.7% increase in drivers over last year, even though the price of gas is up 33 cents from last year with an average of $2.72 per gallon in April.

Experts say prices at the pump are still well below the all time high of $4.11 a gallon, in 2008.

Patrick DeHaan, a petroleum analyst with Gas Buddy, said gas prices cycle every one to one-and-a-half weeks during the spring. Those planning to travel by vehicle will have to contend with traffic congestion and the highest gas prices since 2014, according to a company that surveys gas retailers across the nation.

Gas prices in Rockford are back on the rise after holding steady last week.

"Ranked the most congested country in world, US drivers are all too familiar with sitting in traffic", INRIX Chief Economist and Head of Research Graham Cookson said in a statement. Levels of all three were lower than a year ago led by oil inventories down almost 89 million barrels in the last year. The average price nationally is $2.87, while California is highest in the nation at $3.69.

Gas prices continue to rise and if they remain, it'll cost Americans as much as $450 annually. This new record surprised experts in the field that the record was passed before the Memorial Day weekend as many take to the road during that holiday.

At $59, the average daily cost of a auto rental this Memorial Day is the lowest rate in the past four years and 11 percent cheaper than last year.

$2.00 per gallon in 2017, $2.01 in 2016, $2.42 in 2015, $3.48 in 2014 and $3.20 in 2013.

Airfare is cheaper. AAA's Leisure Travel Index estimates Memorial Day airfare is 7 percent lower this year, averaging $168 for a round-trip flight on 40 of the top domestic routes.

Orlando again tops this year's list of the most-visited Memorial Day destinations in the USA, based on AAA advance national travel bookings.
