But Mourinho will be frustrated his players were unable to work their way behind a disciplined West Ham rearguard and will demand a far better effort against Watford in Sunday's final league game with cup places still up for grabs.

Lukaku suffered an ankle injury against Arsenal in April.

Jose Mourinho has revealed that Manchester United are hopeful that Romelu Lukaku will be fit to feature for Manchester United in their FA Cup final showdown against Chelsea FC next weekend.

The United manager made eight changes from the team which lost at Brighton last Friday as he seeks the right blend for next week's Wembley final with Chelsea. "We are waiting to see if he can play in the final - if not starting at least to be on the bench".

Lukaku arrived for a massive transfer fee of £75 million from Everton to Old Trafford and has scored 27 goals this season.

The Red Devils snatched a late victor against Arsenal through Marouane Fellaini, but failed to score against both Brighton and West Ham - although the midweek goalless draw to the Hammers did confirm United's second-placed finish in the table.

But the Portuguese hopes the Manchester United medical team can get him up to speed enough to have him on the bench.

Michael Carrick is also set to start for one final time before joining Mourinho's backroom staff.

"Carrick had already been decided".

"I have every player apart from Marouane Fellaini and Lukaku available and I don't go to the young players", he said.

"Carrick is not going to end the match because I want him to leave that pitch alone".

Relayed by DH, he said: "I knew I was going to play".
