The Arsenal midfielder has struggled with his fitness over the years, but has avoided injury for the entirety of this season.

There is simply no way that Southgate can please everyone with his squad but one omission that England fans completely agree with is that of Joe Hart.

He has endured an indifferent spell with West Ham this season, losing his place towards the end of November to Adrián and starting only 19 league games in total.

It's a big call from Southgate considering Hart was his 'keeper during the qualification process but Rio Ferdinand is completely behind it.

Former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Lampard, who won 106 caps for England, will be working as a pundit for the BBC during the World Cup.

The former England under-21 coach said his focus was not only on the current World Cup but also on the tournaments that will follow.

Alan Shearer says that Harry Kane will have to produce the goods at this summer's World Cup in order to become a global star.

There is some debate about the midfielders that Gareth Southgate should take with him to Russian Federation.

"Everyone wants to play in a World Cup - everyone wants to play in every match". I'd already seen what the best methods were.

"Maybe there are other players a bit older playing in the league who might be better now or more experienced, but we don't think we could win a World Cup with them in future and would rather invest time and show belief in young players we think could be world class".

Some will suggest that Hart's experience will benefit the squad but when it comes down to ability, Pope is the right choice.
