Speaking to journalists in the Old City, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat hailed the U.S. embassy move as the beginning of "a new world order".

The new USA embassy in Jerusalem is set to open on Monday, coinciding with Israel's Independence Day.

Ivanka Trump has landed in Israel for the inauguration of the US Jerusalem embassy on Monday, as protesters in Gaza prepare for a day of rallies along the frontier that are expected to be met with gunfire.

After stating that he was not only committed to strong U.S. -Israel relations, then-candidate Donald Trump took his stance a step further and promised that moving the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel's capital, would be a presidential priority. "It is still unclear how long it will take to fix and replace the necessary parts".

The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, his senior adviser, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin will lead the US delegation.

As well as the protests by the Palestinians, demonstrations are expected on Monday in other Arab capitals where governments have argued that the status of Jerusalem should only form part of a final peace agreement.

Fraser Valley residents have an opportunity to mark the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba - "Catastrophe" - on Tuesday, May 15 with a candlelight vigil in Abbotsford.

There were already tensions in the weeks before the embassy move.

On Sunday, scuffles broke out between Israelis visiting the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem's Old City, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, and Palestinian security officers.

The Palestinians, who claim Israel-annexed east Jerusalem as their capital, are angered by the American move and have virtually cut off ties with the White House. It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community. Guatemala and Paraguay plan to move their embassies to Jerusalem later this month. Hamas seeks an Islamic state in the entire historic Palestine, including what is now Israel, but has said it is ready for a long-term truce.

The protest came just three days ahead of what the leader of Gaza's ruling Hamas group has said will be a march by tens of thousands who could burst through the border fence into Israel. "We have the greatest love for the president, and we will win", the club said in a statement, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The festivities will kick off on Sunday, with a reception hosted by the Israeli Foreign Ministry. FOZ is committed to advancing the State of Israel and telling the story of Israel, her people, and more specifically the story of the non-Jews that assisted the Jewish people in returning to their homeland as well as returning to their roots.
