Did Twitter Too Sell Its Data To Cambridge Analytica?

Keeping people on Twitter safe is a top priority for us, and is reflected in our policies and practices for managing how developers use Twitter data. "Even in the light of current efforts of Facebook and Twitter to protect as much of their users' data as possible, the very goal of social media is to share information". Cambridge Analytica is under investigation for allegedly misleading rival social-media company Facebook and infringing its policy for handling user data.

Given the current environment of privacy scandals engulfing Facebook, this news has the potential to place Twitter into hot water too, however, distinctions need to be recognised. "Still, this shows just how comprehensive the data collection was", technology portal Engadget reported.

Aleksandr Kogan, who created a personality quiz on Facebook to harvest information later used by Cambridge Analytica, established his own commercial enterprise, Global Science Research (GSR).

If Facebook's Cambridge Analytica troubles have achieved one thing it is surely to have encouraged more people to read these documents. Cambridge Analytica had allegedly used social media to influence the 2016 U.S. election.

Twitter said it had banned GSR and Cambridge Analytica from buying data or running adverts on the website and that no private data had been accessed.

After that, Twitter chose to remove Cambridge Analytica and related entities as Cambridge Analytica operated "using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices".
