Conte: EPL Fifth Position Not Acceptable, I'm Committed To Chelsea

It is a while since Chelsea knew their defence of the title was over.

On Boxing Day they lost 1-0 to Manchester City - a ninth defeat in their last 11 games - so you would have forgiven Toon Army fans for feeling less than festive.

In what is widely expected to be Chelsea manager Antonio Conte's final league game in charge, Ayoze Perez scored twice after Dwight Gayle's opener, and the below-par Blues had to settle for finishing fifth.

They went close to a second with Gayle yet again, but on this occasion his effort was slammed wide of the post on 24 minutes.

Indeed, Chelsea do still have the FA Cup final to look forward to. You'd expect them to give it everything they've got.

And Redknapp says Chelsea's performance was so bad, they should make it up to their supporters.

Rafa, as always, has my full support... And they had some positive football to admire.

The Blue backlash? Meagre. Here's our player ratings for today's sh*t-show.

Possession was Chelsea 58% Newcastle 48%.

It would be soon be 3-0 at Anfield. Kenedy will be the only player to miss out as he is ineligible to play against his parent club, Chelsea. Barkley also made one strong run and shot at Dubravka.

Extending the contract would not only fend off external interests, but also foster Conte's exit who's now fallen out of favour of the owner Roman Abramovich after a poor season. This was another sloppy day.

The managerial situation could yet change in the build-up to the Wembley showpiece next Saturday.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez applauds fans after the match.

Newcastle haven't been great at home this season as they hold the division's 13th best home record, while Chelsea have been impressive away from home and are 4th in the league based on their away record. "We are still talking, so we will see".

Leading unfancied Newcastle to a top-half finish will only add to Benitez's stock.

"We can enjoy today but there is still room for improvement".

"We deserved to lose because our start wasn't good and we suffered by losing every ball".

Benitez said: "If we want to achieve something, we have to understand the way to do that".

The form of the two teams couldn't be any more different with Chelsea winning four of their last five games, drawing once.
