Professor Eitan Hersh, Associate Professor at Tufts University, former Cambridge Analytica research director Christopher Wylie, and Mark Jamison, Visiting Scholar at American Enterprise Institute, are sworn in during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled, Cambridge Analytica and the Future of Data Privacy, on Capitol Hill in Washington, US, May 16, 2018.

Cambridge Analytica LLC listed assets in the range of $100,001 to $500,000 and liabilities in the range of $1 million to $10 million.

Earlier this month, the company, which worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, claimed its business had been ruined by "numerous unfounded accusations" which rendered operating the business "no longer viable". Wylie said Nix and Cambridge Analytica made presentations and sent documents to Lukoil, including a white paper about Cambridge Analytica's data collection and online targeting of Americans.

Cambridge Analytica on May 2 had already announced its intentions of shutting down, ceasing operation and declaring bankruptcy in the USA and the United Kingdom, and Cambridge Analytica's parent company SCL Group was also reported to be shutting down.

"Wylie told the panel that Russian-American researcher Aleksandr Kogan, who created an application to harvest Facebook user profile data, was working at the same time on Russian-funded projects, including "behavioral research". The social giant said an internal investigation revealed that info on up to 87 million users may have been "improperly shared" with Cambridge Analytica.

In announcing their shutdown plans, SCL and Cambridge Analytica complained that "the siege of media coverage" about Cambridge Analytica's use of Facebook data "has driven away virtually all of the company's customers and suppliers".

On 2 May, a statement uploaded on its website said Cambridge Analytica was "immediately ceasing all operations", with the boards appointing insolvency practitioners Crowe Clark Whitehill LLP to act as the independent administrator.
