They had previously won the Europa League in 2010 and again in 2012, the latter coming just six months after Diego Simeone's appointment as coach.

Antoine Griezmann was the hero for Atletico Madrid as the French striker scored twice in their 3-0 win over Marseille in Wednesday's Europa League final in Lyon, allowing his club to win the trophy for the third time in nine seasons.

Boss Diego Simeone was overjoyed with the win and paid tribute to his side's talisman after his 28th and 29th goals of the season. "I owe a lot to Simeone and my team-mates".

"I hope he is happy with us".

The forward has been vocal on his future in recent weeks, with Griezmann claiming he's in talks with Atletico over his plans.

"You have to enjoy winning the title and celebrate it with the fans". The French side should have been ahead inside the opening four minutes with Payet feeding Valere Germain, who could only fire wide when through on goal.

"We let our chance go in the first half. But above all, I'd like to remind everyone of our team's incredible journey during the tournament", said former Los Angeles Dodgers owner McCourt, who purchased Marseille in October 2016. "We have shown we are one of the best teams in Europe".

Gabi's low drive in the 89th minute sealed the win.

Griezmann capitalised on a Marseille error to side-foot coolly past Steve Mandanda in the first half, before a delightful finish in which he lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to double the lead after half time.

Four minutes into the second half, Griezmann started and finished the move for his second.

Marseille manager Rudi Garcia claims star playmaker Dimitri Payet could have influenced a "harsh" result in the Europa League final against Atletico Madrid and gave an update on his injury after the captain left the field in tears.
