The Kim family that has ruled North Korea since it was founded in 1948 has long sought a meeting with a sitting US president, and many observers have argued that Trump's agreement to hold the summit represented a victory in itself for Pyongyang.

The Obama administration had paid $1.8 billion for hostages, Trump claimed in an apparent reference to a January 2016 deal between the USA and Iran in which the United States agreed to pay $1.7 billion to settle a case related to the sale of military equipment before the Iranian revolution.

Hours after Trump announced the location and date of what is being billed as the historic US-N Korea summit, the White House cautioned against any new provocative behaviour by Pyongyang.

He says he'll abandon talks if no progress on nuclear disarmament could be made.

It followed a series of nuclear missile tests conducted by the communist regime.

Tensions began to ease earlier this year, coinciding with the North's participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.

The freed prisoners are in good health, and USA officials said they did not find any significant physical or psychiatric concerns.

"So those were the initial steps that the North Koreans took".

Trump's upcoming summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is only the latest example of the president's go-big strategy.

"If the North Korean government doesn't drop the bombs around their other neighbor countries, that doesn't mean it's actual peace for North Korean people", Jo said in a recent interview.

"We should treat the summit as an opening of a longer process of negotiations with North Korea", said Adam Mount, a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists. "But we're in unchartered territory when it comes to complete denuclearization".

Single-party rule since Singapore gained independence in 1965 has ensured stability and fostered a security state that is among the world's most efficient, although sometimes it is decried by civil libertarians as repressive.

As for the venue, why Singapore?

It would be the first-ever summit between a USA president and a North Korean leader.

Located at the southern tip of Malaysia, Singapore is a regional hub in Southeast Asia whose free enterprise philosophy welcomes trading partners from everywhere. "Since their independence, they've very deliberately developed a reputation as an honest broker between East and West", said David Adelman, the former USA ambassador.

Shortly after they touched down in Alaska, the department released a statement from the freed men. Asked about the chatter in the Oval Office this week, Trump said: "I want to get peace". We looked them straight in the eye and they said to us verbatim, 'God bless America. "Inside of North Korea, there are thousands of people that will still die and keep dying in the future". Their arrests were widely seen as politically motivated and had compounded the dire state of relations over the isolated nation's nuclear weapons.
