Speaker Paul Ryan Announces Retirement

On Friday, the state's Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced he would pass on the opportunity to campaign for Ryan's seat.

As House Republicans poured out of the closed-door meeting where Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told them he won't run for re-election this year, there was a constant theme: Things are on track. And Ryan now appears to be backing McCarthy.

Ryan and enough rank-and-file Republicans could link arms with Democrats to defend the spending deal enacted into law on March 23 and prevent a resumption of hostilities over the budget. Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said an emotional Ryan "choked up a few times trying to get through" his remarks to colleagues and received three standing ovations.

The Lake Geneva Republican was among a handful of Republicans who were being discussed as possible candidates after Ryan announced Wednesday, April 11, 2018 that he would retire from Congress after his current term.

In 2012, he became GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's running mate. Four years later, as Trump was gaining popularity, Ryan warned the country of the divisive tactics the president continues to employ. "We all know that", Dent said. Instead Ryan leaves the House a pathetic, pitiable figure distrusted by both Trumpkins and NeverTrumpers.

But throughout it all, Trump's power within the party continued to grow, as Ryan's waned.

He is giving up on his caucus, his party, his president, and the job.

But a Republican leader built in Mr Trump's own image - a political bomb-thrower, ruled by impulse - is unlikely, Dr Green said.

And besides, the strategist said, the GOP message heading to November is the same.

In the meantime, the scramble to succeed Ryan atop the Republican conference - if not the House majority - could prove intense, some said.

It would hardly assure that Trump's opponents could force him from office. Paul is a big supporter of our local community here.

And so it might have gone, except that Ryan fatally compromised his integrity and reputation by his accommodation with Trump. He had just hosted a donor retreat last week in Texas, and most officials believed he would not leave until after November.

Ryan said that their cheery expressions were because they were celebrating all of their accomplishments, but King cut in to point out that the photograph was rather homogenous. "The speaker thanked the chief of staff for being one of the sane guys in office".

Trump offered well wishes on Twitter before a dinner with Republican congressional leaders, including McCarthy and Scalise, at the White House. And it will fuel speculation that Ryan is watching for a coming Democratic surge, fueled by opposition to President Donald Trump, that could wrest control of the House from Republicans' grip.

Suggestions have also been made that Ryan's departure could lead to other republicans also ending their congressional careers. The Paul Ryan of two years ago would have seemed an obvious choice. "I took it reluctantly". During the interview, Ryan said that even as he would be stepping away from formal Republican politics, he'd still advocate for expanding the GOP's appeal, including pushing for increased diversity in the party. "So I really don't think it affects it".
