According to authorities, witnesses reported seeing the mother trying to set the vehicle on fire in the 4300 block of West Orem.

The woman's daughters are 9, 11 and 13 years old, Houston Police spokesperson Victor Senties confirmed to Newsweek.

A family friend of the suspect, Ana Ester Segovia, had taken her children to church earlier Sunday morning. "The older girl tried to escape, but the mother got her back in the auto".

According to the Houston Police Department, Segovia revved the car's engine until it caught on fire.

Police said witnesses intervened and Segovia fled on foot with the children. During the incident, she allegedly said, "we are going to see Jesus". They said the mother, who eventually was located by police and taken into custody, tried dragging the 9-year-old toward a bayou, KHOU reported.

But Segovia tripped and fell before officers caught up and arrested her.

According to Harris County 185th Criminal Court records, Segovia is charged with one count of felony aggravated assault on a family member.

Arson investigators were also called due to the fire.
