Cage 'protects' Ambedkar statue in Badaun, removed

The Centre has issued an advisory to the Madhya Pradesh government, asking it to "protect" the statues of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar, a senior police official said today.

In a message, Kovind said, Dr Ambedkar was a multifaceted personality whose impact on the society and nation has remained relevant and will remain relevant.

He said on the basis of a police Intelligence report about the festival causing possible tension in the area, the committee was asked, in the eleventh hour, to hold the event at an alternative venue.

All parties Ambedkar Jayanti Ustav Samiti members gathered at Bhadkal gate and paid homage to Dr Ambedkar in a function which was presided over by Samiti president Manmohan Singh Oberoi.

Paying tributes to Baba Saheb, Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal said that Dr Ambedkar made significant contribution in preserving unity of the society through Constitution and in abolishing many social evils.

April 14 (ANI): Remembering Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, renowned filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar on Saturday visited architect of Indian Constitution's house in London.

Earlier, Dalits led by Thakor Solanki, leader of a local union of Dalits, raised slogans against Gandhi as police prevented them from garlanding the statue.

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani's supporters and Bharatiya Janata Party workers clashed in Ahmedabad near a statue of BR Ambedkar on the occasion of the social reformer's birth anniversary on Saturday, ANI reported.

Punjab's Phagwara was tense after a communal clash broke out between a Dalit and a Hindu outfit over renaming of a traffic intersection in a bid to pay tribute to Ambedkar late Friday night. Punjab has highest proportion of Dalit population in the country.
