Trump spurns experts for his video game meeting

A day before she resigned as White House communications director, Hope Hicks told the House Intelligence Committee last week that one of her email accounts was hacked, according to people who were present for her testimony in the panel's Russian Federation probe.

NAFTZ and its members have been strong supporters of the NAFTA and believe it has been an important factor in making USA manufacturing more globally competitive, supporting high-value-added employment in the United States, expanding export markets for US products and services, promoting efficient supply and value chains, and improving standards of living.

EUROFER chief Axel Eggert said "the national security justification the president has used - and the linking of these tariffs to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation funding - is an absurdity".

In recent days, Trump told advisers that his experience in business gave him an edge in deciding what to do on tariffs.

"I'm delivering on a promise I made during the campaign", Trump said.

The tariffs rollout has been rife with confusion and dissension in the White House.

Whatever Washington lawmakers opt to do, they will have to reach a two-thirds majority vote to overcome a presidential veto - forcing Republicans to find support among the Democratic opposition, a challenge in its own right.

The White House made an official statement on today's meeting and the conversation that took place.

During the meeting, President Trump "was asking questions and listening to the answers". "We can not possibly be a security threat to the United States so we are counting on being excluded". "We appreciate the president's receptive and comprehensive approach to this discussion".

Flanked by steel and aluminium workers and members of his Cabinet, Mr Trump also said he was still working through which other countries may be excluded but assured "great flexibility and cooperation to those who are really friends of ours".

NPR's Philip Reeve tells Morning Edition that Brazil is gravely concerned about the USA tariffs, saying they will hurt trade relations and that the South American country has not ruled out sourcing its coal from elsewhere. And Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin called the tariffs "a very risky action" that could put agricultural and manufacturing jobs at risk.

The looming departure of White House economic adviser Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive who has opposed the promised tariffs, set off anxiety among business leaders and investors anxious about a potential trade war. "There may be people who lose less".

Given the generous overlap between those who use the internet and those who play video games, it was all but inevitable that President Donald Trump's call to dial back the blood and gore, expressed in a meeting with major game developers Thursday, would provoke strong online reactions in the life-imitating-violent-art debate. "I disagree with this action and fear its unintended consequences", he said. "While we need tough trade enforcement, we need to be smart about avoiding global trade fights that hurt American agriculture", the coalition said in a statement. Whether the pursuit of measures to stem imports of steel and aluminum were originally seen as part and parcel of the NAFTA renegotiations or whether this is an opportunistic melding of otherwise completely separate issues is hard to tell.
