The quick-footed 23-year-old centre played every minute of last year's Six Nations and brings a different kind of attacking edge to the physical threat Farrell introduced so effectively in Ireland's third victory of the campaign.

Fit-again tight-head prop Furlong returns to replace Andrew Porter, with Ringrose coming in at centre for the injured Chris Farrell.

Leinster star Henshaw dislocated his right shoulder in Ireland's 56-19 win over Italy in Dublin, and Munster's Farrell tore knee ligaments in training.

Schmidt conceded that the 23-year-old's selection was "needs-must" given the team's injury problems, with Jared Payne still unavailable because of persistent headaches.

The second row partnership is unchanged, with James Ryan packing down alongside Devin Toner. The former England hooker has since revised that view and while more conservative options were available to Scotland's head coach, Townsend expressed confidence in the way the youngster has developed in the course of this season, saying he believes he has learned the error of his ways as a rugby player. 'Garry's been extraordinary when he has played for us, he's done great.

"We're hoping he can hit the ground running and get straight back into the form".

Meanwhile, Tadhg Furlong has recovered from a hamstring injury to replace Andrew Porter in the forwards while Iain Henderson makes his return to the bench after recovering from injury. Henderson had been tipped to slot straight back into the side but Schmidt has kept faith with his most-selected player in Toner.

Joe Schmidt's Ireland team will secure the Six Nations title this weekend if they secure a bonus-point win and England fail to secure a bonus-point win against France later in the day in Paris.
