The clinical touch Marcus Rashford showed in Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool delighted manager Jose Mourinho.

The Champions League last-16 clash is evenly poised ahead of Tuesday's return leg after David De Gea inspired Jose Mourinho's men to a goalless draw in Spain.

Following his side's victory Mourinho was asked whether the first win over Liverpool since early 2016 was a ideal performance, he told Sky Sports: "Perfect result. Yes". We got three points, a very important victory, I am a bit exhausted, we have a match on Tuesday.

If Saturday again raised questions about this Liverpool side's ability, like Spurs, to get over the line, it is not a failing that can be levelled at Mourinho.

"Second half we had to continue chasing the game and then we scored a goal and should have been a penalty around Fellaini's situation with Sadio".

"That should not detract from the strides being made under Mourinho, more evidence of which we saw on Saturday".

"In these types of games, when the pressure is on you, you just be yourself and I think that's what seems to happen in these games and the team seems to react well, when maybe we don't react as well in other games". I give you Swansea, Watford, Arsenal, Everton and Crystal Palace on the road and at home against Chelsea and Liverpool, the first half of which was as good as it has been post-Fergie against a top six-rival. We had also the in the first half (a chance) to finish the game and make it 3-0 but we didn't use our chance.

"Sevilla and Brighton are more important than Liverpool".

With Herrera still sidelined, Mourinho could stick with Nemnaja Matic and Scott McTominay in midfield after they were paired together against Liverpool. "It was a great first half, especially", said Matic. It is a joy to play next to him.

Eric Bailly's freakish own goal gave Liverpool hope in the second half, but United held on for a first victory over their North West rivals since January, 2016.

United trail Manchester City by 13 points in the league having played one more match, with Pep Guardiola's side at Stoke City on Monday night.

"He's downstairs now and I will go and speak with him".

Lukaku was instrumental in allowing United to get an early foothold in yesterday's game, earning an assist for Marcus Rashford's opener, before playing a pivotal role for Rashford's second of the afternoon. "That a kid with 21 years old, making all the right decisions, and they want him to make the wrong decisions", added Mourinho. "We didn't defend the counter-attack so good when they had their moments".
