The violence was the latest in a decades-long series of shootings at United States schools and colleges, coming a little more than a month after 17 students and faculty were killed in a rampage at a Florida high school.

The shooter, identified as Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17, was hit and died at a hospital. A 14-year-old boy was also injured in the shooting. As Gaskill fired at Rollins, Rollins "almost simultaneously" fired his gun, Cameron said. The school resource officer who quickly reacted and shot at Rollins is being hailed a hero.

An armed school resource officer had also been on the campus of Stoneman Douglas at the time of the shooting there, and came under criticism for failing to stop the gunman, who was armed with an AR-15 assault-style rifle.

Willey's uncle provided a family statement regarding the tragic incident, "This morning, our family was devastated to learn that our handsome Jaelynn was one of the victims in a school shooting at her high school, Great Mills". "So, in the hours to come, in the days to come, through a detailed investigation, we will be able to determine if our SRO's round struck the shooter".

This weekend, thousands of students are expected to flood Washington for the "March for Our Lives", a national protest to demand an end to mass shooting in schools.

Tuesday's shooting comes as the nation is still reeling from a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

A teenager used his father's legally-owned handgun in an attack inside his high school in Maryland, police said Wednesday.

Sheriff Cameron said no "pre-incident signs" have been found on social media accounts connected to the suspect at this time.

Great Mills High School is located about 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.

"Today's frightful events should not be an excuse to pause our conversation about school safety", he said in a statement.

Yingling says the two victims were shot, but she doesn't know how the shooter was injured.

The 16-year-old female student is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, and the 14-year-old male student who was shot is in stable condition.

Within minutes of the school shooting at Great Mills High School, pastors started organizing a vigil at a nearby church.

"On this day we realize our worst nightmare our greatest asset, our children were attacked in one of our places, a bastion of safety and security, one of our schools", said St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron.

Gov. Hogan said in an earlier statement, "I want to express my deepest gratitude to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and all of the first responders who swiftly and bravely took action to secure the school".

Two students, a 16-year-old girl, and a 14-year-old boy, were both hurt. He added that the shooting should not halt the conversation on school safety, but rather "serve as a call to action".

"He's doing well and we're going to do everything to support and promote him and his well-being", Cameron said. "If you don't think this can happen at your school you are sadly mistaken". "Great Mills is a wonderful school and somewhere I am proud to go".

Mollie Davis, who identified herself on Twitter as a student at Great Mills, posted a series of tweets about the shooting.
