Karti Chidambaram gets interim relief in INX media case from Delhi HC

The special judge posted the hearing on Karti's bail plea on March 15.

This comes two days after the apex court on Tuesday refused to grant anticipatory bail to the Congress leader.

The Court has granted relief till the next date of hearing which is March 20, 2018 and has also issued a notice to ED and the government on Karti's plea.

A Delhi court on Friday ordered extension of Karti Chidambaram's CBI custody by three more days till March 12 after the central investigation agency underlined that it has found "new incriminating materials" against him in the INX Media money laundering case.

Karti's counsel has also alleged that he was kept in a separate room during his custody remand of the CBI starting from February 28 to March 6.

It said it has a recorded statement of Indrani Mukherjea accusing Karti Chidambaram of demanding and receiving a bribe to get the FIPB clearance. He said the CD has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for examination.

Delhi High Court has today granted Interim Relief to former Congress leader's son Karti Chidambaram, observing ED can not arrest Karti if gets bail by a trial court in the INX media.

The CBI had filed separate case against Karti and others on the basis of information about alleged illegal payments made by INX media.

The CBI claims that Advantage Strategic is controlled by Karti.Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi representing Karti in the special CBI court opposed any further custodial interrogation saying, "It's tragic for me (Karti)".

It is further submitted that INX Media received overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305-crore in 2007 when Karti's father P Chidambaram was the Finance Minister.

During the day, the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud asked the acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court to constitute a bench that will hear and deal with the prayer for interim relief on Friday.

The court also directed Karti Chidambaram to surrender his passport to the ED and cooperate with the investigation.

Singhvi also told the court that Karti's blood pressure levels were fluctuating as he was not allowed to sleep as four guards keep playing cards till 2.30 a.m. each night.
