Fourth fodder scam case: Lalu Prasad convicted, Jagannath Mishra acquitted

A court yesterday convicted Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fourth fodder scam case but acquitted another former chief minister Jagannath Mishra.

Special CBI Judge Shivpal Singh also acquitted four other politicians - Jagdish Sharma, former chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, R K Rana, former RJD leader and MLA, Vidyasagar Nishad, former Bihar minister and a former MLA Dhruv Bhagat.

Nineteen others were also convicted in the case, which involved the withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from the Dumka treasury, reports said. The quantum of punishment in the case will be pronounced later. He is already serving a jail term of 13 years in three fodder cases and lodged in Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi.

In this particular case, the prosecution alleged that between 1991 and 1994, when Lalu was chief minister of undivided Bihar, Rs 89.27 lakh were withdrawn fraudulently from the Deoghar treasury, using fake allotment letters and vouchers.

There were total 76 accused in the case and 15 died during trial while five turned CBI approver, reported IANS. The court found him guilty in the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa district treasury during 1992-93. He was sentenced to jail for five years after being held guilty in a third case in January, related to money swindled from the Chaibasa treasury.

October 3, 2013: Lalu Yadav sentenced to five years in jail, fined Rs 25 lakh. The court has acquitted Jagannath Mishra in the case.

"People of BJP and NDA fear that if Lalu ji comes out of jail then they will lose 125 seats in the 2019 general elections", Tejashwi said.

Emerging out of the court, Prasad told reporters he did not wish to make any comment, while party Vice President Raghubansh Prasad Singh said that they would challenge the order in the high court. So what exactly is the whole fodder scam and why has Lalu Prasad Yadav got in this legal trouble? A former Congress leader, Mr Mishra became chief minister of Bihar thrice and served as a minister in the Union Cabinet.
