A report by the Washington Post said that Tillerson was asked on Friday to step down from his post, which he assumed just over a year ago.

US President Donald Trump has fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Mr Tillerson also appeared out of the loop last week when Mr Trump announced he would meet with North Korea's leader and become the first sitting United States president to do so. "He will do a fantastic job!" he tweeted.

Finally, I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service.

In their own statements, Haspel and Pompeo both expressed their gratitude to the President and their excitement in taking on their new roles. "He went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives with a proven record of working across the aisle".

Pompeo is to be replaced at Central Intelligence Agency by Gina Haspel, Pompeo's deputy at Central Intelligence Agency.

He later served in the US Army, ultimately reaching the rank of captain before leaving to attend Harvard Law School, graduating in 1994.

In a statement, Mr Trump said: "I have gotten to know Mike very well over the past 14 months, and I am confident he is the right person for the job at this critical juncture". "A great deal has been accomplished over the last fourteen months, and I wish him and his family well". "His leadership has made America safer and I look forward to representing him and the American people to the rest of the world to further America's prosperity".
