Bucs already showing interest in Richard Sherman

Richard Sherman is spending his first day as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. And if both sides like what each has to say and demonstrate, the two parties are expected to try to get a contract done before Sherman even visits another team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Sherman was vocal in his desire to wanting to play for a contending team, and the 49ers are certainly that after finding their franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo last season.

Third-year corner James Bradberry would benefit from having a player and leader of Sherman's caliber on the roster.

NFL Network also noted that Sherman "has a strong affinity for the West Coast", and San Francisco is close to Stanford, where Sherman went to college.

Sherman, who turns 30 later this month, was released after seven seasons in Seattle. "You can see that the background and Coach Saleh's time with us here and then with Gus (Bradley in Jacksonville where Saleh worked from 2014-16), there is a big connection there".

The Seahawks also released cornerback Jeremy Lane, another move that had been long rumored. Sherman was scheduled to earn an $11.4 base salary in 2018. Overthecap.com has Seattle at just under $31 million for 2018 after Friday.

Let's ignore the dislike many Niners fans probably have for Sherman for a moment and explore the other question. Smith, who caught Sherman's tip of a Colin Kaepernick pass for a game-clinching interception in the 2014 NFC title game, is under contract with the 49ers through 2021 after signing with them previous year.

Smith is slated to make over $8 million next season, but if the team cuts him, they will be freed from all of that money.
