Fresh off of her success with A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay has set up her next direction project with The New Gods at Warner Bros and DC... Meanwhile, Apokolips is ruled by none other than Darkseid and is a dystopia filled with machinery and fire pits. The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. Directing DC's New Gods will also make her the first woman of colour to helm a comic book movie.

The New Gods are exactly that-they're new gods.

DuVernay is no stranger to big-budget films or the superhero genre.

There's a reason why so many DC villains are big, grey CGI monsters, and that's because the studio is really afraid of their movies looking inherently silly and over-the-top. If the visuals in A Wrinkle In Time are an indication, it proves that DuVernay is more than capable of crafting a story using deeply rich worlds that have plenty of potential to expand. The news cements Ava as the second woman to direct a DC adaptation (following Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins), and the first black woman to ever direct a DC Comics book film.

Who are the New Gods? Along with their superhuman abilities, the denizens of New Genesis and Apokolips are also immortal and endowed with a greater intelligence than Homo sapiens, despite their resemblance.

It was mad stuff, and even though the New Gods didn't always find an audience, elements of the series would be adapted into the wider DC Universe. Along with her physical capabilities, Barda wears Apokoliptian armor that enhances her impressive abilities and wields the Mega-Rod, which may look small but packs a punch that could level mountains. Despite being raised to fight for Darkseid's Female Furies, Big Barda became committed to combating the nihilism she had been ingrained with for so many years.

Around half a dozen "New Gods" series have been published since the original with the most recent "The New 52" being released in 2011.
