While US intelligence services do not believe the despot leader's threats, others are more anxious about the prospect of World War 3 igniting from the war of words between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of John McCain for the senator's dramatic thumbs-down deciding vote previous year against the GOP health care repeal.

It was Trump's second appearance as President at the Conservative Political Action Conference, held just outside Washington in Maryland.

He emphasised the importance of future elections, including the upcoming midterms and 2020 presidential contest, warning the crowd not be complacent.

President Donald Trump addressed the Conservative Political Action Convention Friday, telling members of the group they would get their border wall, that he thought some teachers should be armed in school and that his administration "has had the most successful first year in the history of the presidency".

Marc Sisson, student from Nebraska, said "The one thing that probably hit me most was Pence going through the track list of what the Trump administration has achieved the past year".

Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, said Pence's efforts amounted to a "pep rally" for potentially unmotivated conservatives.

The president told the Conservative Political Action Conference that "except for one Senator, who came into a room at three o'clock in the morning and went like that", Trump gave a thumbs-down, "we would have had health care (reform), too". Congressional leaders such as House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., didn't attend either.

Even Steve Bannon was absent.

In his controversial book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Michael Wolff claimed that Trump's daughter Ivanka often mocked her father's elaborate hair constriction process.

Some commentators have said this casts doubt on the usefulness of arming teachers to stop attackers, but Trump drew the opposite conclusion.

"We will really have to strengthen up background checks", the President said.

Instead, there was a sense of unity projected throughout the conference, which was dotted by attendees wearing the president's signature "Make America Great Again" hats and his branded political merchandise for sale in the exhibit area.

To Anthony Del Vescovo, 19, a student at Northeastern University, the conference was "very structured to look like a Trump event".

Some conservatives expressed dismay at CPAC's embrace of Trump.

There was no such criticism audible Thursday.

Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy tells The Associated Press the White House has asked to sit down with him.

Mr Trump's right-hand man added that the escalating tensions between Washington and Pyongyang had led to the end of a long-lasting period of "strategic patience" because of North Korea's repeated threats towards the USA and its allies.
