Kim Yo Jong, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister and close adviser, just sat down for a historic meeting with the president of South Korea in the latest surprising development to come out of the North's decision to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Saturday's meeting between the two neighbours - technically still at war - is the first since 2007 when North Korea's premier visited the presidential palace.

Not long after, North and South Korean athletes entered Olympic Stadium together, waving flags showing a unified Korea - the long-time dream, in theory at least, of many Koreans both North and South. He was in South Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics. They appeared in the VIP box at the Olympic opening ceremony Friday night. She actually lit the cauldron as the home crowd roared. And Bach lauded the joint march of the two Koreas as a "powerful message".

"We're going to continue to put all the pressure to bear economically and diplomatically, while preserving all of our military options to see that that happens", Pence said.

Abe discussed North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and brought up the issue of Japanese nationals who were abducted by the North decades ago when he shook hands and briefly spoke with Kim Yong Nam during the dinner hosted by Moon in Pyeongchang, the Kyodo News service quoted the Japanese government as saying.

Critics believe North Korea is trying to use the worldwide stage to gain sympathy and ease punishing economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure over its nuclear weapons program.

After a chaotic year of nuclear war threats and nuclear and missile tests from the North, the opening ceremony proved to be an evening of striking visual moments.

Pence said Friday the USA would oppose talks between the two Koreas until the North agreed to open negotiations on ending its nuclear program.

Another famous female South Korean golfer also had a part in the Opening Ceremony.

Still, the Koreans were playing the world's sixth-ranked team.

One member of the North Korean delegation is Kim Yo Jong.

While Tokyo has not condemned recent talks between the two Koreas insofar as they concern participation in the Pyeongchang Games, it has also warned against North Korea's "smile diplomacy". More than 2,900 athletes from 92 countries will compete in the games, making it the biggest Winter Olympics to date.

Pyeongchang was not supposed to share the spotlight with Pyongyang.

The North Korean leader in turn has called Trump a "dotard" and threatened to fire missiles into the waters near the Pacific Island of Guam a year ago.

"VP stands and cheers for USA athletes, VP hangs out with US athletes instead of dining with Kim regime, VP does not applaud N. Korea or exchange pleasantries w/ the most oppressive regime on earth", Agen tweeted, with check marks next to each item.
