A life-sized statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was unveiled in Chennai on Saturday as part of grand celebrations to mark the 70th birth anniversary of the late AIADMK supremo.

Modi's presence in the launching event comes days after Tamil Nadu Deputy CM O Paneerselvam said PM Modi and the BJP's top leadership had a role in the merger of two AIADMK factions formed after Jayalalithaa's demise.

Among other achievments of the NDA government, he said, was distribution of 29 crore LED bulbs under the Ujawala scheme, leading to saving of Rs 15,000 crore in power bills. When we help with a woman's education, we ensure that the family is educated.

More than Rs 24,000 crore worth of projects are now being implemented by the Centre in Tamil Nadu, he said, adding all these commenced after the NDA came to power.

On women's welfare, Modi said that when one facilitates their good health, it keeps the entire family healthy and "when we secure her future, we secure the future of the entire home".

He added, "When we empower women in a family, we empower the entire household".

The subsidy scheme has been christened "Amma Two-wheeler Scheme".

Under the scheme, named after Jayalalithaa, the state government offers a Rs 25,000 subsidy for women to buy two-wheelers, NDTV reported. So, the target for this year's drive is to plant 70 lakh trees. Both Palaniswami and Panneerselvam in the morning unveiled a statute of Jayalalithaa at their party office here and also launched their party's organ Namadhu Puratchi Thalavi Amma. The beneficiaries included women who worked in the private sector, an accountant, a salesperson and an assistant in a private store. However, PM Modi avoided any reference to the strong demand from state parties for setting up of a Cauvery Management Board, as directed by the Supreme Court to which Chief Minister K. Palaniswami made a reference in his welcome address.

The scheme, aimed at women empowerment, will provide scooters to working women at a subsidized rate of upto 50 percent. Over 3 lakh women have already applied for the subsidy, and the Tamil Nadu government has said it is in the process of scrutinising the applications and shortlisting the recipients.
