According to Variety, the movies will be separate from both the Skywalker narrative that set the original franchise in motion and the trilogy that Rian Johnson was gifted after he delivered "The Last Jedi" in December with minimal drama.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy described the Game of Thrones pair as "some of the best storytellers working today".

"We arehonored by the opportunity, a little terrifiedbythe responsibility, andso excited to get startedas soon asthe final season of'Game of Thrones'is complete", they said.

From Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

Iger also said the company is close to announcing the first Star Wars project and that "significant" talent is attached to the projects.

Benioff and Weiss are preparing to move on from Game Of Thrones once the long-awaited final series airs in 2019 and had been developing a controversial HBO series called Confederate.

Imagine what it would be like to see the character complexity and intensity that Game of Thrones has mixed with the legacy that is Star Wars.

The announcement came as the Walt DisneyCompany issued its first earnings report since announcing six weeks ago that it would buy much of rival studio Fox's film and television assets in a $52 billion deal. However what we do know is that their next project will involve Star Wars.

Shares in Disney, which also reported a quarterly profit that topped forecasts on Tuesday, rose almost 3 percent in after hours trading.

The news is obviously huge for both Game of Thrones and Star Wars fans, but there's also a risk of Star Wars fatigue with multiple trilogies and stand-alone films, as well as a TV series, now in development.

Though some may be excited about the news, people on Twitter were a bit skeptical.
