Countless customers were left shocked and frustrated that BB&T was down overnight, an incident blamed on a 'technical issue, ' according to the bank.

BB&T told customers on Friday that they can still use their bank-issued debit, credit and prepaid cards.

The bank tweeted overnight Thursday that digital banking, Phone24 and ATM services are now down.

"Our systems are currently being restored and our automated Phone24 service and ATMs are now available".

Millions of BB&T customers were unable to access their accounts this week. BB&T said it doesn't believe this outage is the result of a cyber security issue.

"We are listening to our clients and we are committed to making this right", said Brian Davis, BB&T director of corporate communications. The bank said balances and transactions will become current later in the day. At this time, we have no reason to believe this issue is related to cybersecurity.

"An outage map showed the biggest impact was focused much of central North Carolina, Atlanta, the Washington DC area and Philadelphia".

The bank also said that if customers have incurred fees directly related to the outage, "we will waive or reimburse those fees". He said bank branches that are normally open on Saturdays will stay open two additional hours to assist clients.

BB&T yesterday afternoon acknowledged the problem on its Twitter account, apologizing for the inconvenience and saying that it is working to restore services.
