Amid the Irishman's continued hiatus from his own sport - he hasn't appeared since winning the lightweight title at UFC 205 - it would appear he has his eyes fixed firmly on fighting Mayweather again.

McGregor has made it clear he wants the rematch to happen, via TMZ Sports.

Fans on both sides seemed pretty excited at the prospect of Mayweather stepping into the octagon to fight the Notorious.

"Floyd said leading up to the fight with Conor that he would do both", White said on the UFC Tonight show this week.

However talkSPORT presenter Jim White has reported the pair are discussing a potential rematch in the octagon and believes the fight will happen. According to boxing journalist Gareth A Davies, the negotiations are ongoing and he believes we're going to see the two go head to head in an MMA match.

Despite White's comments, Mayweather has insisted he didn't commit to a rematch on McGregor's turf.

"I can come right back", Mayweather said during an Instagram live video.

"I didn't say that".

He said: "5 years ago today, I signed a contract with the UFC".

"Conor McGregor in an MMA fight will f-king destroy Floyd Mayweather like he's never seen".

"Could and would do is different things".

"We went over and boxed him, the UFC and Conor McGregor, and now it's time for him to reciprocate and come fight in the Octagon".

People will tune in to see Mayweather get stopped by Conor McGregor and it won't affect his boxing record.

The Money may have officially retired when he beat Conor McGregor in 10 rounds back in August, but there's little chance that speculation of a rematch is going to die down.

"I can do a three or four fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars".

He tried to file this name for trademark shortly after his fight with Floyd Mayweather.
