Mixed doubles is happening for the first time at the Pyeongchang Games.

When mixed doubles wraps up on Tuesday, the siblings will start curling separately in the men's and women's tournaments on Wednesday.

Yep. No alternates are allowed.

Where did this sport come from?

"These other players from Canada are very good and have a lot of experiences", he said. It's known as an arena club because they curl on the ice in the arena.

How is mixed doubles different from regular curling?

It's much faster paced than traditional curling.

It's a Me and @heccabamilton playing Sweden in game three! "It's just the one shot that gets us and bites us in the end", Becca Hamilton said.

Well, it adds to the pace.

The teams alternated scoring through the first four ends.

Yep! Even though these stones are placed before the end begins, they can still score points. "It was just kind of a bonehead play not taking the power play in six".

The Winter Olympics run through February 25, and curling has one of the longest competition schedules at the Winter Olympics. Essentially, once per game the team who is choosing where the stones are positioned is allowed to move the pre-positioned stones off to the side a bit. "Everyone has earned their right and they're the best of the world". Both players are making their Olympic debuts, and as a duo they are now ranked No. 2 in the world. Lawes joined the team when the other woman, Rachel Homan, made the Canadian women's team and couldn't do both in PyeongChang.

Also on Thursday, former NHL veteran Chris Kelly was named captain of Canada's men's hockey team.

There was a smattering of applause for each team as they were announced.

The U.S. curling team of Matt and Becca Hamilton led off a mixed doubles tournament by defeating a team from Russian Federation.

In the case of a 4-way tie, it was unclear Friday on whether or not U.S. would have to play a tiebreaker match, but even if they won that match they would not reach the playoffs. Pay close attention to them because this duo could surprise people and make a run for the podium.

The match went quickly, a hallmark of the mixed doubles format.

Eight teams are competing in the newly introduced Olympic event with the top four finishers in the preliminaries qualifying for the semifinals. That's not exactly an ideal stretch of matches when you're looking to medal.
