He then went on to attack Watford, claiming that they 'lose managers or fire them every season'.

Silva's dismissal comes at the back of Hornets' 2-0 loss to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium yesterday.

The first question from a journalist was direct: "Are you leaving for Everton?". Everyone in the room expected him to leave.

The Portugese manager was linked strongly with a move to Everton earlier in the season before the Merseysiders turned to Sam Allardyce. He has also been in charge at Malaga, Osasuna, and Almeria in Spain.

That budget stood at €150 million (Dh675m) in 2012, but only €40m when Gracia took charge two years later, with most of the stars from Ruud van Nistelrooy to Santi Cazorla, Isco to Nacho Monreal, long gone.

Gracia made his name with Malaga, steering the Spanish side to consecutive top 10 finishes in La Liga between 2014 and 2016. Not only that, they did it by playing attractive football. Real Sociedad and Villarreal were among the clubs he represented in a playing career that concluded in 2004.

The club announced before the final game of the campaign that it had been decided, following a meeting between the Italian and the board, that he would be stepping down after the match.

A mark of his influence is how badly Malaga have struggled this season - they finished in the bottom half last season and are bottom now, having gone through four different managers since Gracia departed just 18 months ago.
