Vermont health officials say flu season could last several more months

Texas has ranked number one with the most flu activity nationwide.

Kendra Dougherty, an epidemiologist for the state health department who tracks influenza stats in Oklahoma, said this year's flu season began earlier than last year's and looks similar to the 2014-15 season. CDC officials said that this is likely the peak of flu season because the spread started early this year.

Although the CDC says that this year's flu vaccine has only been 10 percent effective, they say that the best bet for fighting the flu is to get a flu shot.

"We are now seeing a mix of flu types, including the A (H3N2) strain that circulated last winter in the United Kingdom and then in Australia", he said.

The main strains circulating continue to be flu A (H3N2), known as Aussie flu, A (H1N1), known as swine flu, and flu B.

During this week, 47% of hospitalised patients with confirmed influenza tested positive for the Aussie flu, while 53% carried the Japanese flu.

"If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, it's important to see a doctor as soon as possible", said Dr. Brendan De Marco, associate director of Infection Control for CommUnityCare Health Centers. "But as far as Tamiflu goes, it has been a problem for the last couple years that is why prevention is what we have been preaching".

Levine said, "I think in general that's true in any given season so I don't want to make it sound like this season is different than other, it's another reason why we recommend all children over six months of age get vaccinated". "That is more than 90 percent of hospital beds that are filled within those public health districts", Alabama Acting Health Officer Scott Harris said. The vaccine effectiveness against the predominant H3N2 strain has been reported in the low 30 percentile range.

The number one way to avoid catching it is to get a flu shot.

"The A (H3N2) strain particularly affects older, more vulnerable age groups".

GP consultations for influenze-like illnesses are described as "very high" in York - more than any other area - in a report published by Public Health England.

If a child shows severe symptoms, they should be taken to a pediatrician and then the emergency room if necessary, doctors say. Flu sufferers should be free of a fever, without the use of a fever reducer, for at least 24 hours before returning to school or work.

The current flu vaccine has little effect on the flu strain going around that leads to severe symptoms, Fox32 reported.
