The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, say that Cohen arranged the payment in October 2016 to Stephanie Clifford, who goes by the stage name Stormy Daniels.

Apparently, Miz Clifford alleged to sources vetted by the WSJ that she and POTUS had a sexual encounter in 2006, a year after the businessman Wednesday Melania Trump.

A White House official declined to comment to the Journal about the payment, but said that the allegations of the interaction between Trump and Clifford were "old, recycled reports, which were published and strongly denied prior to the election".

Mr. Cohen also sent the newspaper a document signed by Clifford/Daniels that stated the affair gossip is untrue and any report which claims she received hush money is "completely false".

He also hit out at the Wall Street Journal's "outlandish allegations" against Mr Trump and said the paper had been trying to "perpetuate" a "false narrative".

Clifford was described as "one of the most sought-after actresses in the adult industry" in a 2012 Daily Beast article, where she said that being an adult-film actress does not mean she couldn't be a great mom. That report came days after the Washington Post released a video from a 2005 Access Hollywood recording in which Trump said he could grab women by the genitals because he was famous. This reportedly was after she and her lawyer negotiated a nondisclosure agreement to prevent her from publicly discussing the supposed sexual encounter with the billionaire businessman.

"I recently became aware that certain news outlets are alleging that I had a sexual and/or romantic affair with Donald Trump many, many, many years ago".

Clifford wrote in the letter that when she met Trump, he was "gracious, professional and a complete gentleman to me and EVERYONE in my presence".

Two sources at ABC News told CNN that Daniels was in touch with producers at ABC's "Good Morning America" in the fall of 2016 about a potential interview and was prepared to discuss Trump. The report said that she eventually got the payment through her lawyer Keith Davidson, and that funds were transferred to a client-trust account at City National Bank in Los Angeles.

On Friday, the Journal reported that the payment was made through Clifford's lawyer. She was arrested July 25, 2009, on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence battery that was later dropped.

Sexual harassment and assault allegations against Trump from more than a dozen women surfaced during the campaign, and again during the rise of the "Me Too" movement.
