Thomas was traded from the Celtics to the Cavs for Kyrie Irving in August after leading Boston to the Eastern Conference finals. Thomas will come off the bench and be on a minutes restriction.

Kyrie Irving went in the opposite direction in the biggest trade of the offseason and the two teams will come face to face for the second time this year in a blockbuster showdown on Wednesday night at TD Garden.

The slow grind is finally over.Isaiah Thomas, who has been rehabbing a significant hip injury for months, his attitude getting worse as he got closer to his season debut, was smiling once again when discussing the lengthy process to medical clearance.

The 29-year-old's return could provide a huge offensive boost to the Cavaliers especially after coming off his best individual season where he averaged a career-high 28.9 points per game.

The Cavs have sorely missed another scoring presence on the court this season, as they now sit third in the East after a slow start, with LeBron James and Kevin Love carrying most of the load Kyrie Irving left behind when he was traded, so the return of Thomas will hopefully improve their offense tremendously. However, the Cavaliers have to be careful now and make sure that he doesn't suffer another injury. Ultimately, the Cavaliers need Thomas to be somewhere near what he was last season, an elite scorer and shot creator that gives Cleveland options and diversity.

The team has long targeted January as for Thomas' return, and he has steadily increased his practice work over the past several weeks. I mix and match a lot of lineup changes and things of that nature to see how we can be really good. The Cavaliers also meet the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, but Thomas won't play in both legs of a back-to-back so soon after his return.
