But professionals usually prefer skype and the company is looking forward to making their conversation secured.

That changes today for Skype Insiders, who now have access to end-to-end encryption via the new Private Conversations feature. From the chat window, only emoticons, files and audio messages are available to send.

Private Conversations allows users to conduct end-to-end encrypted Skype audio calls between two people, and send text messages or files like images, audio, or videos between them.

If you do start a Private Conversation, the contents of those chats will be hidden from the chat list and notifications will be turned off as well.

Microsoft competitors including Apple with iMessage, WhatsApp and Signal already provide built-in end-to-end encryption. "After the recipient accepts your invite, all calls and messages in that conversation will be encrypted end-to-end until you choose to end it", explained Ellen Kilbourne, manager of the Skype Insider Program. For now, Private Conversations with end-to-end encryption is available only to Skype Insider testers using Skype for iOS, Android, Linux, Mac and Windows Desktop.

To start a private conversation, you need to tap on + icon and select "New Private Conversation". You will have to take extra steps to ensure you're in a private conversation, however. You can only participate in a private conversation from a single device at a time.

Skype is one of the few popular messaging and communications services that doesn't yet employ full end-to-end encryption.

Skype had the potential to be what WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are now.

Signal is the gold standard of end-to-end encryption. This is not supported in groups. That for me isn't the right way to go about securing a chat conversation. A lock icon will appear next to a contact's name to show that a conversation is encrypted.

Skype is rolling out a new feature soon.

Private Conversations are specific to a device.
