Rawat guns for schools

Acknowledging the suspension of military aid to Pakistan by the US, General Rawat averred it was premature to talk how much of an impact it would have on Pakistan, India and the extended neighborhood.

He however added that if there is a drop in infiltration, the Indian Army will fully follow the ceasefire. Pakistan is sending messages regularly to return to ceasefire.

Trump, in a tweet on January 1, attacked Pakistan saying that the U.S. has foolishly given them more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and got lies and deceit in return.

"In the schools in Jammu and Kashmir, what teachers are teaching should not be taught. Now the time has come for us to focus on the northern border...therefore our infrastructure development on the northern border has to be speeded up". Gen Rawat said the Chinese presence in the northern part of Doklam continued but has thinned out and the level of activity has also gone down. "We will call their bluff". If we will have to really confront the Pakistanis, and a task is given to us, we are not going to say we can not cross the border because they have nuclear weapons.

"When government put a cap, we said we will review the policy and ensure only genuine people get benefit", he said. Gen Rawat said, "We understand China is a powerful country but we are not a weak nation".

He said India will have to continue its policy of dealing sternly with cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, notwithstanding the pressure on Pakistan by the US. He added that road construction had been going on in Doka La since 2000 but the Chinese soldiers had come close to Tosa Bala, dividing north and south Doka La in June a year ago just before the India-China standoff started. "But we have mechanisms in place with China to defuse any such incidents", he said.

"It is not because we saw a threat".

"I do not think everything is going to be hunky-dory and Pakistan is going to be isolated and it is going to be declared a terrorist state".

"It is a step by step process".

To another question, he said India and the U.S. were deliberating on a proposal to appoint military liaison officers at each other's combatant commands.
