Steve Wilks is the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries also expressed support for Wilks, who like him is a native of Charlotte.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera promoted Wilks to defensive coordinator following the 2016 season after Sean McDermott departed to become head coach of the Buffalo Bills. The time of that press conference has yet to be determined.

Before his time in the National Football League, he spent time with eight different university programs, including a stint as coach of Savannah State in 1999. He became Carolina's assistant head coach in 2015 and defensive coordinator past year. He was previously with the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers before joining the Panthers. They were expected to interview Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores this week, but Wilks apparently won general manager Steve Keim and team president Michael Bidwill on Friday. While some jobs are officially still open, reports have said teams have settled on their coaches and had to wait for the playoffs to end to make it official: Josh McDaniels to the Colts, Matt Patricia to the Lions and Pat Shurmur to the Giants. The Cardinals boast a talented secondary led by Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu.

At least one Cardinals player appears happy with the move.
