There are four stages in the league and each stage has a duration of 6 weeks. The league has attracted a lot of attention not just because of the quality of Overwatch, the video game, but also because of the reputation of the various team owners in sports such as football, baseball and basketball.

Overwatch has struggled as an esport but yesterday Blizzard's big hope, the new Overwatch League, launched with a bang.

It expands on an agreement between Twitch and Blizzard signed a year ago that gave the streaming service rights to esports tournaments for games such as Starcraft, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm.

Each team will play a total of 40 games in the regular season split down the middle with 20 cross-division games and 20 within division. Although born in New Jersey, he was raised in nearby La Cañada Flintridge and said the Blizzard Arena's importance is tied to replicating the "special" moments he experienced in local arenas as a Los Angeles sports fan.

For several hours, Overwatch League dominated Twitch viewing figures, dwarfing League of Legend's and PUBG's most popular streamers. The only territory that the game isn't being exclusively broadcast on Twitch is in China.

For now, though, Overwatch League is still in an awkward spot. For the first season, 12 franchises are representing major cities around the globe.

Both Los Angeles teams ran riot in their respective matches, and watching fans may have been getting a bit anxious that we would go the entire first day without seeing an actual competitive match.

While city-based teams are standard in traditional sports leagues, they aren't the norm for eSports, where teams typically run under their own banners or those of the companies that sponsor them.

While other teams in the league need to feel each other out a bit, these two teams know exactly what the other is all about, and we saw some very high level play.

But Blizzard's push to publicize the Overwatch League would be futile if the matches themselves weren't up to scratch. Not only is the Overwatch League shaping up to be a compelling viewing experience for fans of the FPS, but it seems destined to attract a slew of newcomers to the game, too.
