Nebraska Community Blood Bank Needs Donations

Severe winter weather has caused 150 blood drives to cancel, meaning over 5,500 blood and platelet donations go uncollected, the American Red Cross reported.

"Last week's massive winter storm had a significant impact on our blood supply with blood drives cancelled from SC to ME", said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Blood Services.

In North Carolina alone, 23 blood drives were cancelled or closed early due to last week's winter storm, with almost 600 uncollected donations.

The blood bank just sent both blood and platelets to the east coast Monday morning, but now they need help replenishing their supplies.

This comes after a slow November and December with "seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday schedules collectively contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed".

The Red Cross says there's an urgent need now for blood and platelets of all types, although platelets and type O, B and AB blood are at more of a critical juncture.

The Red Cross is desperate to find 10 whole blood donors and five plasma donors who can give blood at the Ipswich donor centre as soon as possible.

2, the blood center is only projected to receive 53 percent of its normal weekly donations in the coming week. "So when we can cover our hospital needs we like to help out other hospitals in need", said Busta. Donors can save about 20 minutes by completing their health history the day they donate using Donor Pass at donateblood.centralbloodbank.org/DonorPass.aspx.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available.
