Mustang's tribute to classic Bullitt model revealed in Detroit

The original icon was revealed at the Detroit Motor Show alongside an all-new 163mph 50th anniversary special edition of the Bullitt Mustang. Pretty cool stuff, huh? Appropriately, the Mach 1 reveal comes at an event where Ford also showed off a performance gas SUV in the Edge ST and a "Bullitt" special edition of the Mustang.'s Editorial department is your source for automotive news and reviews. One of two Mustangs were used in the film - one of which was discovered previous year in a Mexican junkyard - and the other was unveiled this weekend at a special event which saw the auto added to the Historic Vehicle Association's roster - one of only 21 cars to be added. There's subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic 5-spoke alloy wheels, red-painted Brembo brake calipers and a black grille.

The rumours of a new Bullitt started flying some time ago, but kicked into top gear when a green Mustang with a crosshair emblem at the rear was spotted driving around in Chicago. The Kiernan's '559 Mustang was the "hero car" used for many of McQueen's close-up scenes.

Exterior paint choices are Shadow Black and Dark Highland Green - as worn in the movie.

The 2019 Mustang Bullitt will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, with a white cue ball shift knob as homage to the original '68 Mustang used in the movie. This makes it even more powerful than the latest Mustang GT by 14bhp, while its top speed is 8mph higher, too.

On the inside the Mustang Bullitt is awash with leather accented with green stitching, while a 12-inch LCD display is the centerpiece of the infotainment system and gets a custom Bullitt welcome screen.

The 2019 Mustang Bullitt will be available this summer, though a specific release date and price has not yet been announced.

"As a designer, it's my favorite Mustang - devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn't need to scream about anything - it's just cool".

Three factory-installed interior options are available, including a Bullitt Electronics Package which adds navigation, memory seats, an upgraded sound system and assorted driver assists.

It was long presumed lost, but the 1968 Mustang GT fastback in fact changed hands a few times, an ultimately was inherited by Sean Kiernan in 2014.
